I look back at this and actually feel a little bit

I look back at this and actually feel a little bit sad for 19 year old me. I had finished my A-levels, went travelling for 2 months, came home and was pregnant within a few months. My friends were out living the 19year old dream and I was on maternity leave, waiting for a baby to arrive, waiting for my life to change with undeniably no idea what was really coming. Nearly full term I went shopping with my Mum only to burst into tears in the middle of M&S as I felt like everyone was looking at me, judging me that I was young and pregnant. The paranoia when I left the house was insane to the point that I barely would. Although, I was a repeat visitor to triage with reduced movements. An awesome, intuitive midwife (Asha 😘) must have read the HELP ME I had written all over my face and looked past what I was saying to the anxiety that I was facing. Long story short, just by her saying, I hear you girl made me feel less isolated and less like I was going to be judged for holding my hands up and saying I’m struggling and I don’t have a freaking clue how I’m going to get out of this.
I will gladly talk about the struggles that I’ve faced as I hand on heart believe that no one goes through life without experiencing some kind of challenges with their mental health. I’m all for raising awareness that experiencing different emotions at key, pivotal moments in your life is completely unashamedly acceptable and shouldnt be something we shy away from. Asking for help, isn’t always about seeing someone who will stick a label on you and give you medication. It’s about acknowledging that sometimes things are incredibly shit and you don’t feel like you have two feet on the ground and THAT’S OK to talk about. And whether you need medication to help you, counselling or just a good old shoulder to cry on, always know you are not alone in this crazy world that is motherhood.

This was my amazing midwife, Brenda. She was literally incredible. She gave me space when I needed it in early labour. She supported my decisions even when they were against what the policy said- I only felt confident doing this because I trusted her wholeheartedly and knew all the risks vs. benefits. She gave me encouragement exactly when I needed it and said three little words, “Remember, stay calm” when I was about to lose my shit in transition (textbook 🙄). This was enough to remind me that I was so close to the end. She was kind, calm, extremely caring and more that I could have wanted during Delphi’s birth. She also makes a mean tea and toast 👌🏼 Brenda was amazing and so was Ellen who came in to give more encouragement when my placenta didn’t come out straight away, Lynsey who supported me being on the birth unit, Ellie who was the best community midwife and also Faye who helped me out towards the end of my pregnancy. Plus Asha, a midwife & great friend, who was a big influence in my decision to be a midwife from the care and love she showed me being 19 and pregnant with my first those 12years ago. Plus @chuikingli who’s not a midwife but took this photo so I can show Delphi in years to come who helped bring her into this world 🌍. An evening in March last year, I posted a photo of a Mum who had just given birth, punching the air looking powerful. Along with a quote off a pregnant woman called Andrea who was in my Bumps on Lockdown FB group (a group made to support women online through lockdown.) It read... “When this is all over (and it will be!), you will be the women who were pregnant/gave birth during a global pandemic. You're the ones who faced the unthinkable and soldiered on because you had to. If you can go through this, you can go through anything. You’ve got this! Super Mum! ❤️ " I posted, then sat at my table to teach a Zoom antenatal class. After, I checked my social media and it had blown up. Women felt connected with the words and the photo. They wanted some reassurance, some positivity, a chunk of empowerment. It was a “HELL YEH” moment of solidarity to women, all in the same boat, across the globe 🌍. It was a magic moment. Who would have though a social media post would have built such a powerful community based purely upon women supporting women. It ended up reaching over 14 million people! But, it wasn’t all holding hands and cheering each other on. There were real worries over what lockdown meant for women giving birth and their partners. But, also for the months after for women who were home looking after their newborns. A time where we say ‘It takes a village’ was swapped to ‘batten down the hatches.’ Motherhood can feel isolating enough, without having to physically isolate. This photo, is everything! It’s an “I made it” photo and a message that I want to shout from the rooftops 📣 The Birth Hero Tee is a testament to women, it is a memory of what women faced during lockdown but also, it’s a reminder that you can go through anything and still punch the air after. It’s for all the challenging times that result in a fist pump. Isn’t it funny as women, how many times in our lives we give ourselves a label that limits what we do. “I’m too FAT to wear the skirt.” “I can’t go for that career now, I’m a Mum.” It’s funny how much guilt we carry on our shoulders... Feeling ashamed for wanting to have some time without our children. Feeling guilt for wanting to go back to work, feeling guilty for being at work missing precious time with our children. Feeling guilty for not working & carrying feelings of not doing enough. It’s funny that little inner voice we give ourselves that also sometimes spills out to others... I’m not good enough. She’s doing better than me. I’m always disorganised. Why does she always have her shit together. All this needs to change.

Can you believe this housed a baby for 9 months...?? Crazy huh? This photo was from my own birth (Thank you @chuikingli) and this bag of waters housed my 4th baby Delphi. It's mad to think that sac was where she grew 😯 This is my 2nd “birth nerdy” type of photo this week. This one is unusual as the amniotic sac has come clean away as she was born. The waters broke right as she came out, so the sac came out too and was found in the birthing pool after. It’s so often that we see the amniotic sac still attached to the placenta when it comes out, just with a hole/tear in it where baby has come out from. I personally, have never experienced my waters going before contractions. My waters only go at the very last minute... I think this photo is evidence that they are tough as old boots 😆. And with Nancy, my 3rd she could have rowed a boat out there was so much water. As a midwife, I have had many wet socks and soggy shoes from women who's waters have tsunami'd me at birth, wet socks is part of the job description 🤷‍♀️ 🌊 .
